You meet new people, are asked tough questions, and feel the pressure to represent yourself in the best light. Plus, you have to remain pleasant and friendly throughout.

Still, there are plenty of techniques to help make the process easier. Take some time to prep beforehand and you should feel so much more relaxed.

Below are some of our job interview tips to help you succeed. Thinking these things through will take off the strain and help you feel more comfortable about the job interview process.

1. Prepare

Go over interview questions and practice giving your answers to some of the common questions interviewers ask. Come up with good anecdotes to show off your skill set. You want to show off past work successes to prove you are a good potential hire. And make sure to have a list of your own questions ready to ask.

2. Do homework

Do some research about the company, helping you be ready for any questions the interviewer might ask. Know the name of the person you are interviewing with, and make sure to use it at the meeting. Then relate to the interviewer what you know about the company, and how you can fit in.

3. Ready yourself

Choose clothing that is modest, professional and neat, and skip outlandish hair and makeup. Also make sure to have your portfolio if appropriate, as well as spare resumes, paper and pen.

4. Be punctual

This may go without saying, but make sure to be on time for the interview. Better yet, show up five to ten minutes early. You can even practice driving to the interview beforehand so you know exactly how long it will take you to get there.

5. Stay relaxed

It’s key to stay relaxed and calm. Keep in mind that body language will tell the interviewer a lot about you. Try to get your mind in the right space, take deep breaths, and maintain eye contact with the interviewer. Make sure to practice active listening so you know exactly how to answer once the other person is finished talking.

6. Show your expertise

Use what you know about the business when you answer questions. If you are talking about job skills you have, try to match them to what the company does or is looking for. And try to use examples. Explain a particular area of that company where you could apply a solution from your skill set.

7. Always follow up

Finally, make sure to always send a follow up note afterward. This can be in the form of an email or a card in the mail. Express your thanks for the person taking the time to meet with you, and reiterate your commitment to securing the job.

Going in for a job interview can seem daunting – even if you’ve sat in on several before, there are always nerves involved.
